I do not know any, I mean ANY, pro (or even semi-pro) in Maui who sails production boards.
No prototype, that is a custom Mark Nelson with the Mistral graphics... all pros do that.
Wait, one rare exception has been Buojmaa Guillol, who made an Aloha Classic on production boards... he broke all the customs he had... not hard to believe!
Anyway, this is a thing that bugs me a lot. Now that I live here, I am aware of this... but before coming here, just like most of the "normal" windsurfers in the rest of the world, I had no clue about it.
I think it's extremely unfair and it's like the board brands cheat on their clients.
At a certain level, being sponsored by a board brand means to be paid by that brand and have the obligation to have that brand's graphics on your custom boards... it's ridicolous!
Unless, of course, the brand organizes a photoshoot and brings the production boards and put the pro sailor on it for a couple of hours...
It actually makes a lot of sense, that a pro sailor in Maui needs something unique... just don't pretend to be sailing a production board... come on!
At least it's different with the sails. What they sail is what we sail... which actually doesn't make too much sense for me, seen the skill difference
